Inspiration - Stefan Jacobs

A few words on inspiration

Inspiration, noun, Stimulation of the mind or emotions to a high level of feeling or activity. And from Wikitionary; A supernatural divine influence on the prophets, apostles, or sacred writers, by which they were qualified to communicate moral or religious truth with authority; a supernatural influence which qualifies men to receive and communicate divine truth; also, the truth communicated.

Ok that last definition is a bit weird so lets forget about that one. Inspiration is getting into a state mind that allows to be creative, to see perspectives or details that one might else miss. And I think that this process can be helped a bit. There are I think three things or circumstances or whatever you want to call them; location, mind set and atmosphere. The first, location is dependent on whether you live in an awesome place :) or if you travel to awesome places. But I also believe that any place has photographic opportunities, and if you look hard enough there will alway be something to take pictures of! The second, mind set, is about being open to other scenes or subjects compared to what you usually take pictures of. I think that in any genre there are challenges, and opportunities to learn new techniques or insights, that you can then apply to a different subject. For instance, when I was photographing at Defqon.1 a few years ago, or Mysteryland two years ago, I could use my experience in landscape photography to capture a few cool shots during the sunset. Third is atmosphere, which I think is different from place.

This morning I stood up at 6 to be at a nature reserve in time for the sunset (see picture above). And although the place is quite beautifull, the atmosphere of the world waking up around you when the sun is slowly illuminating the sky in a fiery red color is so inspiring. In these cases it doesn’t matter that I am ‘just’ standing on a place that is 20 min driving from my home. And that is mostly the point I want to make. You don’t need to travel the world to the most uninhabited places, or where every instagram influencer has been to. There are awesome pictures to be had in your back yard, in the forrest outside the city you live, even in the city, or the beach close to home. Due to the ever increasing influence from social media we all want to travel, and have experiences more epic than the last holiday of one of our friends. Sometimes it feels like we ended up in a bidding war on who has gone the furthest, deepest or highest. And although there is inherently nothing wrong with wanting to experience new and great places, it should not weigh you down. It should not create an empty feeling of missing out. All pictures below, in my opinion show that even close to home, awesomeness can be had, and it will not cost you anything but some time, and waking up (very) early.
